Food Forward Harvest – June 22, 2019

Harvest food, fight hunger, build community! 2 years ago, Or Ami congregants purchased a “Food Forward” truck whose sole purpose was to transport surplus fruits and vegetables to the homeless. We will be collecting the beautiful fresh fruit that would otherwise go to waste at Orcutt Ranch on June 22, 9:30 am, and donating 100% to local hunger-relief agencies. Join the Volunteer Harvest Team to help us pick as much fruit as possible. This opportunity is open to 20 volunteers, 5 years old and older, though children under 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult. Sign-ups are necessary.

Or Ami’s David Labkovski Project: Documenting History Through Art April 26-May 1, 2019
At the end of April, Congregation Or Ami will be hosting a pop-up art gallery featuring the work of Lithuanian/Israeli artist David Labkovski. Below are some events for you to get up close and personal with Labkovski’s unique work…
Friday, April 26 at 7:30 – 9:00 pm
Art Shabbat – with Leora Ralkin, Executive Director of the David Labkovski Project on “Documenting History Through Art from Jerusalem of Lithiuania, to the Gulags of Siberia, to Israel and America: The Life and Journey of Art and Artist, David Labkovski.” Art Shabbat focuses on the legacy and responsibility of bearing witness. Gallery tour immediately following services. Please bring your leftover Pesadik desserts for the pot-luck Passover Oneg.
Tuesday, April 30 at 7:00 – 8:30 pm
Labkovski Paint and Sip – Paint in Labkovski style while learning about his life and enjoying wine. This will take the place of April’s Torah study. $20 Registration (Free for Adult B’nai Mitzvah and Adult Confirmation Students)

In this intergenerational program, our Kesher 6th Graders will be paired with active adults and empty nesters for learning and getting to know each other as we examine Shalom Aleichem and his characters through Labkovski’s illustrations. Jewish World Watch – Walk to End Genocide 2019

The Walk to End Genocide is a community event that brings together activists of all ages and backgrounds to rise up in one united voice to say: “We will not stand idly by while genocide and mass atrocities occur.”
- We Walk for the 68.5 million refugees and displaced persons fleeing genocide and mass atrocities worldwide.
- We Walk to urge our government to take action and to demonstrate that there are thousands of people who care about the crimes against humanity affecting children, women and men every day.
- We Walk to raise funds to educate, advocate and provide on-the-ground relief for survivors of genocide and mass atrocities. Our projects help people in Sudan, South Sudan, Syria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as the Darfuris forced to flee Sudan and the Rohingya who have faced ethnic cleansing in Burma (Myanmar).
JWW also offers the Teen Ambassador Program (TAP). JWW is dedicated to building global citizens with the knowledge of world Problems and leaders with the ability to take action. JWW designed TAP believing that every teen has the ability to make a difference in the World RIGHT NOW and to be a leader to others while doing so.
The TAP program has two ultimate goals. First to build confident young adults who understand what it means to LEAD. Second, to develop teens to serve as JWW ambassadors to their communities as partners in the mission of ending genocide and mass atrocities and helping those who have been affected by the upheaval that genocide and mass atrocities leave in their wake. Participating in TAP for a minimum of at least 10 hours could serve as a very worthy Mitzvah Project.

Sr. Adult Social Action Crew: For the Troops Care Packages
On Saturday, March 30 at 9:30 A.M. We will meet at FOR THE TROOPS, 2960 Cochran Street, Simi Valley (in Sycamore Village Shopping Center). We will assemble “We Care” packages to be sent to members of the American military. These packages contain basic supplies as well as goodies, games and a show of support. Then, at 11:30 A.M., we will walk a few doors down to Red’s Barbecue & Grillery for lunch and socializing. We hope you will join us for this enjoyable and satisfying event.
