Sukkat Shalom Community Justice Team Meeting, January 15 2019
Sukkat Shalom Community Justice Team
Next meeting at Congregation Or Ami
Tuesday, January 15th at 6:30 pm
After a year of sharing stories of passion in our world with one another, one issue continued to arise for Or Ami congregants. We are frustrated and worried about the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Times has reported that the number of those living in the streets and shelters of the city of L.A. and most of the county surged 75% — to roughly 55,000 from about 32,000 — in the last six years.
Therefore, a dozen or so congregants came together to help lead a campaign called Sukkat Shalom: Seeking Housing and Peace for All which aims to increase permanent supportive housing in Los Angeles County for those experiencing homelessness.
This Sukkat Shalom campaign seeks to engage Or Ami community members of all ages in a large-scale social justice effort. Social justice or advocacy focuses on changing public policy, legislation, and/or institutional practices that attempt to address the root causes of problems impacting the quality of life of many people in our community.
Our activities include supporting the building of permanent supportive housing by working with community agencies like LA Family Housing, government representatives and community councils to support legislation that align with our goals.
The committee offers the opportunity for people looking for ways to make a difference in our community. We invite you to come to our next meeting, Tuesday January 15th at 6:30 pm. If this date conflicts with other activities you have planned, you are welcome to attend future meetings. Please contact Rabbi Julia Weisz if you have any questions.
